Everything you need to know about using PathMBA.

Getting Started

Type a question about any leadership or management challenge and press Enter. PathMBA will search its source library and give you an answer with numbered citations.

Click any citation badge to see the original source material. Your conversations are saved automatically and appear in the sidebar.

Response Modes

You can change how PathMBA responds by clicking the mode button next to the input field. There are three modes:

  • ConciseQuick, direct answer in 2-4 paragraphs. Best for simple questions where you want a fast answer.
  • DetailedThorough answer with frameworks, conversation scripts, and action plans. Best for learning a topic or preparing for a situation.
  • CoachingMentoring conversation that asks probing questions before giving advice. Best for working through a challenge or making a decision.
Memories

Memories are personal notes about you — your role, team size, goals, and challenges — that persist across sessions. When enabled, PathMBA uses these to personalize advice to your specific situation.

To set up memories, go to Settings and toggle "Personalized memory" on. Then write notes in the text area. For example: "VP Engineering at a 50-person startup. Managing 3 team leads. Preparing for Series B."

Conversations & Sidebar

All conversations are saved automatically in the sidebar, grouped by time.

  • Starconversations to pin them to the top
  • Projectsorganize conversations into folders. Drag and drop to move them.
  • Renameuse the three-dot menu on any conversation
  • Searchpress Cmd+K or Ctrl+K
  • Deletefrom the three-dot menu, or delete all from Settings
Playbooks

Playbooks are personalized, multi-phase coaching plans built from real sources. Describe a challenge — like scaling a team or preparing for a difficult conversation — and PathMBA generates a step-by-step plan with actionable steps grounded in the source library.

Each playbook has phases and steps you can check off as you complete them. Click "Go deeper" on any step to expand it into detailed substeps. You can create playbooks from scratch or generate one from an existing conversation.

Access your playbooks from the sidebar or visit the Playbooks page.

Practice Mode

Practice Mode lets you rehearse difficult management conversations with AI-played characters before having them for real. Choose from 5 built-in scenarios (performance feedback, pre-PIP, promotion denial, fairness pushback, high-performer feedback) or create your own custom scenario with any person and situation.

During practice, the AI stays in character — responding as the employee would, with realistic emotions and pushback. Your messages appear in amber to remind you it's a practice session. You can adjust difficulty (Normal, Hard, Epic) and response length (Quick or Thinking).

When you're ready, click "End Session" to receive a coaching debrief: an honest assessment using SBI (Situation-Behavior-Impact) analysis, turn-by-turn highlights with exact quotes, skills ratings, and recommendations from real leadership books. The debrief uses radical candor — it tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.

Use the banner buttons to copy the conversation as markdown, rich text, or print/save as PDF. Access Practice Mode from the sidebar (click Practice to filter practice sessions) or the welcome screen.

Attachments

You can attach files to your messages by clicking the paperclip icon next to the input field. Supported file types:

  • Text files: .txt, .md, .csv
  • Images: .png, .jpg, .gif, .webp

Maximum file size is 1 MB per file.

Incognito Mode

Click the ghost icon in the top-right corner to start a temporary chat. Incognito conversations are not saved and your memory notes are not used. This is useful for quick questions you don't need to keep.

Tips for Better Questions
  • Be specific about your situation. "I manage a team of 8 engineers and need to address underperformance" gets better advice than "How do I manage people?"
  • Mention the outcome you want. "I need a script for giving feedback" or "Help me prepare for a 1:1 with my skip-level."
  • Ask follow-up questions. The assistant remembers the full context of your conversation.
  • Try coaching mode when you're working through a decision — it asks probing questions to help you think clearly.
